Safe, Healthy, Respectful, Civic-Minded Schools

Framework:

• Supporting the Implementation of Responsive Classroom - Creating healthy and respective school culture – a climate for learning, Chris Dodge, Pre-K-6;

• Service Learning to enhance Learning Opportunities, KIDS Consortium and UVM project work, Jean Berthiaume and Ellen Berrings, Pre-K-12;

• "Teaching Health through Literature" Integrating the work of creating healthy schools, health assessment, and Writing, Linda King, Sue Dillon and Susan Hennessey Pre-K-12;

Expanding on work begun by a group at the VT Department of Education, our group will read children’s and young adult literature, catalog these books/stories according to social relevance, and health related content areas. In addition we will develop teaching and writing prompts as well as assessment pieces to evaluate students’ achievement of health concepts and skills related to the pieces of literature reviewed.
